Q & A: Mophead/Moisture

Beloved readers, mophead, asked:

Hi, After some research I realized that my hair has protein overload… (I think) and that I need more moisture. I only co-wash with conditioners such as Suave or VO but I didnt realize that these are protein laced. I have been reviewing your conditioners and I cant determine which conditioner I should try to bring back some balance. What ingredient should I stay away from that contains Protein? or should I go with natural ingredient instead? Thank you and have a great day.

This is rather difficult to answer, dear heart.

Why?

Any number of deep conditioners could add moisture back into your hair. Yes to Carrots makes a great one (read my review)  as does Redken (read my review). Moisturing co-wash conditioners like Yes to Carrots (read my review) or Herbal Essences Hello Hydration (see my notes on thick haired users, read my review) or, perhaps, those by L’Oreal (read my reviews here) are also effective. I don’t know anything about your regimen: if you DC, if you relax, if you color your hair, how often you use heat, if you don’t use heat, etc., which would help me make better recommendations.

As for avoiding any particular ingredient(s), if you fear you have given your hair too much protein, stay away from hydrolyzed keratin or collagen as well as products with hydrolyzed wheat protein in the First Five Ingredients.

I hope that helps, m’dear. Thank you for stopping by! ^_^
